Originality In Modern Music

The problem with music, in general, is that no music is 100% original. This may sound bad, but there is a logical reason for this. About 95% of the music we have heard was made with the same musical notes, in similar patterns.

Most music is made with 5 notes on the pentatonic scale or with the 4 usual chords. Even electronic music is made in the same rhythmic patterns.

Similarly, most songs involve a verse, a chorus, and a bridge. Songs that can be labelled as 'original' without any doubt are those that cross all these lines. A great example of this is Queen's, 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.

The film industry has more variations to work with. They can incorporate new ideas that have evolved in modern society. With this in mind, how many of the TV shows and movies we watch are actually original?

If you look at Disney movies, old and new, the base themes of most of them are similar. They include magic, love, and good vs evil. TV shows follow similar lines too.

Although a handful of films and shows address new social issues and make you think, many of them are largely the same. The question is - why?

The answer can be found in what we want as a society. The themes of love, hope, and good winning over evil are things we WANT to see because we can all relate to them. And what we want to see is usually what is profitable to sell.
