Spirit of Labour: Celebrating International Labour Day

Linked table of contents

Each year on the 1st of May, International Labour Day, frequently referred to as May Day, is celebrated worldwide. The day is commemorated to honour the labour group's work and effort. The day honours the labour protest's demand to reduce working hours during workdays and paid holidays.

The History

Labor Day started in the United States of America in 1886. During the height of industrialisation and urbanisation, people in business exploited the working class by forcing them to work for 15 hours every day. Notwithstanding this exploitation, the workers decided to stand for their rights.

Relevance

The recognition of Labour's day began when industrialists began exploiting the working class. They demanded hard work from employees yet paid them a minimum wage. Workers were forced to labour anywhere from 10 to 15 hours per day in unpredictable circumstances in enterprises such as chemical plants and mines. Many employees used to get sick, and a few died.
