Here, “dog” is the name of an animal. Hence, the noun in this sentence is “dog”.

4. Give me the spoon.

Here, “spoon” is the name of a thing. Hence, the noun in this sentence is “spoon”.

Types Of Nouns

In this section, we will learn class 2 English nouns further to know their types. Nouns are of various types. Let us know what these are.

Nouns can be common, proper, collective and abstract.

  • Common Nouns

These are nouns commonly used to refer to a name, place, animal, or things. For example, boy, girl, river, tree, dog, cat etc.

Boy - The boy is running.

Here, the boy is not named. Hence, we are referring to him with the common noun “boy”.

River - The river is flowing.

Here, we do not know the name of the river, and so we are referring to it with the common noun “river”.

Tree - The tree is tall.

Here, we do not know the name of the tree, and so we are referring to it with the common noun “tree”.

  • Proper Nouns

These are noun words referring to a particular person, animal, or place. For example, Ganesh, Wednesday, Taj Mahal, Shimla etc. These people, places, animals have these specific names.

Here, we must also know that proper nouns start with a capital letter as a rule.

Ganesh - Ganesh is singing.

Here, the person’s name is Ganesh, which is a proper noun.

Taj Mahal - Taj Mahal is one of the wonders of the world.

Here, we are talking about one particular monument, which is not called by any other name anywhere. Hence, the Taj Mahal is a proper noun.

Shimla -  Shimla is a hill station.

Here, we are talking about a particular hill station that is not known by any other name. Hence, Shimla is a proper noun.

Wednesday -  Wednesday is a day in a week.

Here, we are talking about a particular day in a week. Hence, Wednesday is a proper noun.

  • Collective Noun

A word that refers to a group of things, animals, and people is called a collective noun. For example, a flock of sheep, a pack of cards, a herd of elephants, etc.

Flock -  She saw a flock of birds flying over her head.

Here, we are not talking about one bird, but a collection of birds. Hence, “flock” is a collective noun here.

Pack - There was a pack of cards kept on the table.

Here, we are not talking about one card, but a collection of cards. Hence, “pack” is a collective noun here.

Herd - The boy brought his herd of sheep back home.

Here, we are not talking about one sheep, but a collection of sheep. Hence, “herd” is a collective noun here.

  • Abstract Nouns

Noun words that talk about a feeling or a quality are called abstract nouns. For example, honesty, bravery, happiness, etc.

Honesty - Vipul is an honest boy.

Here, “honest” refers to a quality that Vipul has. Hence, it is an abstract noun.

Bravery - She was awarded because of her bravery.

Here, “bravery”  refers to a quality. Hence, it is an abstract noun.

Happiness - Her happiness showed on her face after the results.

Here, “happiness”  refers to a feeling. Hence, it is an abstract noun.
