About Elephants

Elephants are among the biggest animals on earth. In terms of size, they are second only to the blue whale. On land, no other animal is bigger than them. Different species of elephants are found in different countries.

Types of elephants

Elephants are primarily divided into three kinds. Two of these, the African Savannah, also known as the African Bush, and the African Forest Elephant, are dominant species in Africa. The third is the Asian variant, which is a regular sight in the Indian subcontinent. The African elephants are usually bigger and taller than their Asian cousins. The African Bush Elephant is considered the largest animal by size and weight. It can grow up to 13 feet and weigh up to 10 tonnes.

Physical characteristics of elephants

Elephants can live up to the age of 80 years. Although they are not great runners, they can reach speeds of 40 kilometres per hour when running away from a predator or chasing something. Elephants are voracious eaters. An adult elephant can have up to 100 kilograms of food per day. They also require huge amounts of water daily to match their food intake in weight.

The trunk of an elephant is a one-of-a-kind organ. Not only does it make them unique, but also allows them to carry out several bodily functions, like breathing and drinking water. It also serves as an organic crane with which they can lift enormous weights. Elephants also use their trunks for feeding. They can carry up to 10 litres of water in their trunks. Elephants also use their trunk to communicate danger and friendship among the horde.
