Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was born in October 1931 at Rameswaram, in Tamil Nadu. His father was a boat owner who ferried Hindu pilgrims from the famous Rameswaram temple to Dhanushkodi.

 

APJ Abdul Kalam pursued his education at Schwartz Higher Secondary School in Ramanathapuram district and graduated in Physics from Saint Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli in 1954. He joined the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as a scientist after graduating from Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1960. He worked as a scientist and as a science administrator, mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

 

Kalam had been working hard at ISRO even before he became its Chief Scientific Advisor. His work won him several awards and accolades like the Padma Bhushan in 1990 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1997, which are the third and second highest civilian awards in India, respectively.
