Should there be a ban on smoking in public places?

Smoking is a poor habit that many individuals have taken on, since times immemorial. In recent times, cigarette smoking is becoming more and more rampant, despite widespread public health and environmental concerns. The government cannot ban it altogether because:

  • Sellers will sell cigarettes at double prices in the black market.

  • People working in these companies, such as farm labourers, tendu leaf pluckers, bidi or factory workers and retailers will lose their jobs.

  • The government gets 28439 crores in taxes from cigarette, which will be lost overnight.

Smoking, especially in public places, is immoral and unethical, which is a significant issue for other people. Cigarettes are harmful for the health of not only smokers but also for other people and even animals. They are also a major cause of air pollution. Hence, it should be banned, especially at public places. Doing this will contribute to:

Reduction of waste

Cigarette butts contribute millions of pieces of garbage each year. In many places, especially in India, people smoke and throw away the butts on the road, thereby creating this garbage.  Cigarette butts are made up of several cellulose acetate fibers that, although biodegradable, take years to degrade and remain there. If smokers had been sensible enough about the environment, this wouldn’t have been an issue, but unfortunately, this isn’t the case. As a result, smoking needs to be banned to safeguard the environment and reduce such waste.

The fumes of cigarette smoke

The fumes generated from smoking cigarettes are deadly for the people living in our surroundings. While smoking, a smoker not only damages his own body, but also damages other people’s body as well. ITS harmful fumes are a major cause of cardiovascular diseases (diseases of the heart, arteries, and veins). Smokers suffer from hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart attack and stroke.

Workplace health and safety

The employer is responsible for providing a safe and healthy work environment for its employees. Even though many employees prefer to work in environments where smoking is permitted, others may feel compelled to do so despite their personal preferences. Smokers' failure to control their addiction should not force others to change their workplace.

Conclusion:

It is evident that smoking has various adverse effects. And even though not caring for the health of smokers might sound reasonable, it risks the health of others. Therefore, it must be banned in public places.
