A Well-Kept Secret

I had a tiny little secret once,

That I kept hidden for months.

To make my secret a top-secret, I shared it with one of my friends,

And took a promise from her to never share it with anyone else.

She was indeed my best friend, so I trusted her,

Will she ever tell it to anyone was my only fear.

Every day I would ask her if our secret was safe;

I called her from different phones many a time,

I wanted to check whether she spills the beans or keeps them fine.

Like a true friend, she kept my secret to herself,

I was so proud of her that I told her another secret.

To remember both the secrets she called me every day,

Sometimes she got confused and mixed them anyway.

So I had to write down those secrets to her on letterhead,

She would read it every day before going to bed.

She promised to not share the secret with anybody else,

I believed her because I knew she could forget it any day.

It was such a high profile secret for both of us,

The thrill of keeping it cemented the trust within us.

Finally, we decided to keep it a secret till June 1st;

Because June 1st was her best friend’s birthday,

She wanted to gift the secret to him on that day.

I felt a little bad because the secret was well-kept,

One day I got so angry with her, but then I wept.

I wanted her to trade secrets only with me.

I didn’t have any of her secrets, and I found it to be mean.

So when she reveals my secret to her friend,

I thought our friendship would soon end.

But we both forgot those secrets one day,

And my secret is a secret till today!
