1. Kezia wanted to please her father by making a pin-cushion for his birthday. She did not know what to fill it with, so she tore up the papers she found on her mother’s bed and stuffed them inside. Those papers were her father’s important speech for the Port Authority. When the speech was lost, there was great confusion in the house. Kezia admitted what she had done. Instead of being pleased, her father became very angry and punished her.

2. Mr Macdonald was a cheerful, playful, and loving father. He played with his children in the garden, carried the baby on his shoulders, and laughed with them while they played. He enjoyed their company and was friendly with them. Kezia’s father, on the other hand, was strict, silent, and seemed unapproachable. He did not play with Kezia and always appeared busy and tired. Unlike Mr Macdonald, he showed his love in a quiet and reserved way.

3. Kezia begins to see her father as a human being when he comforts her during her nightmare. He comes to her room, picks her up, and takes her to his bed. He lets her sleep beside him and warms her feet. While lying close to him, she feels his heartbeat and realises that he is not so big and frightening after all. She understands that he works hard and is often tired. This makes her feel sympathy and affection for him.
