1. Grandfather buys Toto from a tonga-driver for five rupees and brings him home to add him to his private zoo.

2. Toto is pretty because he has bright sparkling eyes, pearly white teeth, and a long tail that adds to his good looks. His face often shows a mischievous smile.

3. Grandfather takes Toto to Saharanpur because he is going there to collect his pension. He carries Toto in a big black canvas bag. The ticket collector calls Toto a dog because he sees Toto’s face and considers him an animal that should be charged like a dog. So he charges three rupees as fare.

4. Toto tests the water with his hand, then slowly steps into it and washes himself with soap. He has learnt this by watching the narrator. One day, he jumps into a kettle of warm water kept on the fire. When the water starts boiling, he keeps hopping in and out and almost boils himself before Grandmother saves him.

5. Toto was very mischievous and destructive. He tore clothes, broke dishes, and caused a lot of damage. The family could not afford the loss, so they had to sell him back to the tonga-driver.
