Lushkoff has become a beggar by circumstance. He was formerly a singer in a Russian choir and was sent away for drunkenness. He could not get along without lying because no one would give him anything when he told the truth.

2. What reasons does he give to Sergei for his telling lies?

He says that he cannot get along without lying. No one will give him anything when he tells the truth, so he lies about being a student or a schoolteacher in order to receive help.

3. Is Lushkoff a willing worker? Why, then, does he agree to chop wood for Sergei?
