    Think about it

1  On his way to the fair, the child sees toys in the shops, a flowering mustard field, dragonflies, butterflies, insects, worms, falling petals and doves. He lags behind because he is fascinated by these beautiful sights and keeps stopping to look at them.

2  In the fair, he wants burfi, a garland of flowers, balloons, to listen to the snake-charmer and to ride the roundabout. He moves on without waiting for an answer because he knows his parents will refuse to buy them for him.

3  He realises he has lost his way when he turns around after asking for a ride on the roundabout and cannot see his parents anywhere. His anxiety and insecurity are shown through his loud cries, tears, panic, running here and there, and repeatedly calling out, “Mother, Father!”

4  He loses interest in those things because he is scared and only wants the safety and love of his parents. Nothing else matters to him at that moment.

5  The story does not clearly tell us what happens in the end. However, it is likely that the child is reunited with his parents with the help of the kind man.

    Talk about it

    Sample answer (student-generated activity):

To ensure that we do not get lost, we should always stay close to our parents or elders in crowded places. We must hold their hand and avoid wandering away alone. It is important to remember their phone numbers and address. If we get separated, we should stay in one place and ask a police officer or a responsible adult for help. We should not talk to strangers or go anywhere with them without informing our parents.
