The Canterville Ghost (abridged)
When the American Otis family bought an old English mansion called Canterville Chase, everyone warned them it was haunted. Mr Otis laughed and said, “We don’t believe in ghosts.” On the first evening the housekeeper showed them a red bloodstain on the floor—the mark of Lady Canterville—but Mrs Otis calmly cleaned it with a modern remover. Shocked, the ghost vanished in anger. The next night, the Otis twins set up fake ghosts to scare him back. Each attempt he made to terrify them ended in laughter. Tired and lonely, the Canterville Ghost hid in the dark halls. Only young Virginia Otis felt pity for him. She listened to his story of guilt and helped him pray for forgiveness. Soon after, his spirit disappeared into peaceful light. The next morning, the family found his skeleton behind a wall with bright flowers blooming above it.
