Hello! Do you enjoy poems? I do! They have so much rhythm, rhyming words, and narratives that sound like music. Then one day, my teacher said, "You'll be giving a recitation of an English poem to the class next week." Why did my teacher give me such an announcement? At first, I was afraid. I didn't know how to stand and recite a poem before people. What if I forget my lines? What if I recited too fast? But guess what? I learned how to do it step by step. And now, I love reciting poems! I even get thrilled when I hear, "You have a poem to perform!" In this blog, I'm going to share all that I learned so YOU can rock your English poem recitation too!
What is Poem Recitation?
Reciting a poem involves reading or uttering a poem aloud with emotions, expressions, and the correct voice. It is not merely reading out the words - it is about causing people to feel something when you read. When you read a poem, you're sharing the poem's magic with others. You bring it to life with your voice!
Why is Poem Recitation Important?
Reciting poems benefits you in countless ways:
- You become a good speaker
- You learn to convey emotions
- You become bolder
- You enhance your English speaking skills
- You become proficient in public speaking
I was nervous beforehand. But after some recitals, I felt more courageous. And what do you know gave me the most boost? PlanetSpark's Public Speaking Course taught me all the tips and tricks to speak clearly and confidently. It's a blast, too!
Step-by-Step: How to Enhance English Poem Recitation
Let me reveal to you the step-by-step process that I used to become a poem expert!
1. Select the Right Poem
Select a poem that you enjoy. If you like it, your voice will reveal it. You can choose:
- A cheerful poem
- A humorous one
- A sorrowful one
- Or even a nature poem
- Ask your teacher if you're not sure which is fine to use.
2. Know the Poem
Before you recite, have an idea of what the poem is about. Ask yourself questions like:
- What is the poem about?
- Who is speaking it?
- What emotions are in the poem?
If there are difficult words, get them explained by your parent or teacher. Once you know the poem, it is not so difficult to say it with emotion.
3. Practice the Correct Way
Don't read it once and again. Practice as an artist! Here's what I do:
- Stand in front of a mirror
- Say slowly and clearly
- Use facial expressions (happy, sad, excited)
- Put pauses where they sound good
- Practice your tone and pitch
PlanetSpark assisted me with this so much. In their sessions, we practiced voice, body, and eyes when speaking. Learn how to speak like a star?

4. Practice Body Language
This part is so much fun!
Smile if the poem is joyful! Be serious if it is a sad poem.
Use hand gestures ????
Use facial expressions (eyes, eyebrows, mouth)
In PlanetSpark, I had a class on body language and gestures alone. It made my speech look so interesting to watch!
5. Establish Eye Contact
Do not keep looking at your paper throughout. Try to glance at the audience while speaking. It makes them listen more intently. Even if you get nervous, simply glance at one smiling face in the room. It works!
6. Include Voice Modulation
This is altering the tone of your voice. Don't be dull or lifeless. Lift your voice when the poem is enthusiastic, lower your voice when it is serious or quiet, pause significant lines, and slow down sometimes
7. Start and End Strong
Begin your recitation with:
- A smile
- A welcome like "Good morning, everyone"
- The poet and the title of the poem
- Then begin the poem!
- And finish by saying: "Thank you."
Or leave them pondering with a final look or act! PlanetSpark taught me to always finish strongly. Be it a poem, a story, or a speech - the ending is important! Want to finish your recitation with a bang? Try PlanetSpark's expert-led public speaking classes today!!
Some Tips to Keep in Mind
The following are some additional things that I discovered while reciting:
- Record yourself and watch it - you'll notice where to work on
- Practice in front of family - it's just like an actual audience
- Breathe deeply - don't talk too quickly
- Don't panic if you miss a word. Just grin and continue
- Dress up - it makes you feel prepared and confident
My First Experience Reciting a Poem
I still recall the first time I recited a poem. I was so anxious! My hands were clammy, and I had almost forgotten the words. But then I recalled what my PlanetSpark teacher used to tell me: "Just breathe, smile, and say it like you mean it." So I did. And the people applauded! I was so thrilled. And now, I've performed in front of the entire school - and I'm no longer afraid. All because of practice, encouragement, and PlanetSpark's fantastic speech classes.

Find the Magic of Poetry with PlanetSpark's Poetry Course
At PlanetSpark, we feel that poetry is not merely nice words - it's an effective means of communicating emotions, improving confidence, and establishing good communication skills. Our Poetry Course is devised to make children not only read and write poems, but also deliver them with conviction and presence.
Here's what your child will learn with our poetry course modules:
Creating Imagery & Knowing Emotions
We start with assisting children to explore imagery in poems and learn how to paint vivid pictures with words. They learn to make use of emotional imagery and imagery of colors to bring poems to life in the reader's mind. They also know how to use feelings such as happiness, sadness, anger, or surprise in their poetry. These sessions are effective in enabling children to relate deeply with their thoughts and feelings.
Learning Poetic Elements and Forms
Children learn the fundamental elements of a poem, including theme, mood, and tone. They learn to recognize themes in poems they have read and practice in finding information that will disclose deeper meaning. Our mentors take them through various types of poems such as limericks, narrative poems, and odes. Each type helps playfully develop their creative mind. They also exercise in writing their lines through methods such as the ABAB rhyme scheme, grasp of rhythm in poetry, and even writing rhymes in rhythm, giving their poems a musical touch and making them memorable.
Performing Poetry with Expression
PlanetSpark is more than writing - we get kids to read poetry confidently. Children learn how to speak in public through reading poetry. They rehearse eye contact, facial expressions, and gesturing to illustrate words. With a happy line or a sad stanza, they learn to read every poem with the appropriate feeling and body language. From being excited to angry, they become experts at employing their entire self, voice, face, and body to bring every poem to life.
Building Confidence and Communication
Our Poetry Course not only makes children better writers but also effective communicators. With guided, entertaining sessions, they gain confidence to perform for people, communicate their emotions, and tap into their creativity.
