The Necklace (abridged): Reading Comprehension for Class 7

Mathilde Loisel dreamed of luxury and fine dresses though she lived a simple life with her kind husband, a clerk in the Education Office. She felt unhappy that she could not afford grand things. One day, her husband brought home an invitation to a government party. Instead of joy, Mathilde sighed, saying she had nothing suitable to wear. Her husband gave her money to buy a new dress. Still not content, she borrowed a sparkling diamond necklace from her wealthy friend, Madame Forestier. At the party, Mathilde looked elegant and admired by all. But when she returned home, she realised the necklace was missing. In panic, she and her husband searched everywhere but couldn’t find it. Too ashamed to confess, they replaced it with an identical one by borrowing money. To repay the debt, they sold their house and worked tirelessly for ten long years. Mathilde’s beauty faded, and she grew worn from hardship. One day she met Madame Forestier on the street and told her the truth. Shocked, Madame Forestier replied, “Oh, my dear! My necklace was made of imitation stones—it was worth very little!” Mathilde stood silent, realising how her pride had cost her ten years of struggle.
